Nicolette Mace is a private investigator out of necessity, not choice. With her family dead and nowhere else to turn she had to learn to stand on her own two feet and live the only way her father ever taught her to.
“My name is Nicolette Mace, but you might know me as the Raven Siren. I’m a Private Investigator living the 1930s romantic dream in this new and exciting modern age. I keep records of everything that happens; everything I have seen and done. Why? There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamed of in your philosophies.”
“It was odd, even after six months had gone by, to wake up in bed and remember that Louise and Arthur weren’t in the apartment. It took me even longer to get used to the idea that they wouldn’t ever be again.
It isn’t something I had ever felt when Laura had died. Yes, she was my mother and I loved her, but then again, I was very young when she’d died and I couldn’t really remember what it felt like.
The apartment had always been too small for three people to live in, but I’d never known anything else, so I couldn’t compare it to anything. Now it felt like an echoing cavern that was void of any form of comfort.
The bed, which I had shared with Louise, was little more than a cheap Queen-sized bed. We’d shared it for as long as I could remember; it had grown too small for two teenage girls to share without getting very cosy, but now seemed to be the size of a cruise liner with her no longer there to share it with it.
It was all because of one man, a man that had believed my father was responsible for trying to kill him whilst he was out on bail, Kevin Metis. It hadn’t been my father who had tried to kill Metis; it had been another P.I. by the name of Danny MacDonald that had decided that the criminal justice system was too slow and that Kevin Metis didn’t deserve to be tried by a jury of his peers.
Metis decided to retaliate. Louise had been raped whilst I watched and was then murdered. Then Arthur had been murdered, found floating in the river. I had not seen either of the bodies. Danny had identified them, and the funerals had been closed coffins.
I hadn’t wanted to see their faces again.
Never again.”
