Lady of Fire is the fifth book in the Chronicles of Celadmore, the second book in the Shroud of Darkness trilogy and the second book in the series to be written.

“I’d finally finished Shroud of Darkness after 12 years of writing it, I was so sick of writing the series that I had to take a break from it. In fact, I took a break for a while from writing and Lady of Fire is the book that I came back to writing with.”

Things are looking bleak for Celadmore as Lady of Fire moves the characters from this generation down a road of war.

“A lot of the characters had to grow up in Lady of Fire, they had to put aside childish notions of what they wanted the world to be like and face up to the reality that was in front of them – find hope and joy wherever they could. It’s something I was going through myself when I was writing the book. At the time I hadn’t intended to pour so much of what I felt into the book, but now that I go back and look at it, I’m really glad I did. I think the story is stronger for it.”

When it comes to reviews, Lady of Fire seems to be fairly well received so far.

“This sequel to Shroud of Darkness picks up exactly where the previous book left off without even missing a beat. The opening sees the characters from the previous book reeling in the wake of the plot twist and deciding what they will do next.

Having been led through Shroud of Darkness not seeing the plot twist coming, Lady of Fire is full of revelations that make all the little nagging elements from Shroud of Darkness make much more sense. The feeling you have all the way through that Gruagadon shouldn’t be trusted but you can’t help but ignore the doubts about him because of how well he present himself.

Some of the loose ends from Shroud of Darkness are tied up and the development in relationships between the characters is wonderful. One of the best parts of this book is how the minor characters such as the children of the royal line have time to develop and really make you invest even more in the world of Celadmore and what they are struggling with.

Can’t wait to see what happens next.” – Taken from Goodreads

“Lady of Fire has some really brutal moments in it for the characters, things happen that completely transform relationships and also put their reputations on the line. It’s much grittier than Shroud of Darkness and the outlook really isn’t great for Celadmore.”

Lady of Fire is available for £1.99 in digital formats and £9.99 in paperback formats from all good retailers. You can get your copy now from amazon.

Shroud of Darkness banner 2
Shroud of Darkness is the fourth book in the Chronicles of Celadmore, but it was the first book in the series to be written. It is also the first book in the Shroud of Darkness trilogy.

“When I started writing Shroud of Darkness I was 12. I had been inspired to write something epic, but it wasn’t called Shroud of Darkness until I was 15. Originally the book was going to be a single volume called Flight of the Swallow. The heroes and villains were the same, but the portals that feature in the series were used quite differently. Starting writing something when I was so young, it was hardly surprising that the book transformed into what it is now. This was partly due to me growing up and gaining more experience of the world, but also from the inspiration I drew from the trailer for Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring. Arwen threatening the Ringwraiths in the river gave me the inspiration to create the warrior women of the Anaguras and the appearance of Strider in the trailer gave rise to the Queterians. At that age I hadn’t read Lord of the Rings and I hadn’t even seen the movies before I started writing.”

Shroud of Darkness is an epic that sees Celadmore as a very different realm to the one that Kasnata and her people inhabited.

“Things have changed in the 400 years between the two trilogies. War still remains though. Celadmore is recovering from a twenty year war that has ravaged the land and the characters are all feeling the after effects of the events from the war. The Order is much more divided and the Valians are far more of a threat than they were in Rising Empire.”

Though the world has changed since Rising Empire, you also get to experience much more of the realm too. The central character in Shroud of Darkness is Venetia, one of the RAVEN queens of the Anaguras, the Queterians have their own king and though they are still one people, their lives, cities and military forces are split.

“Shroud of Darkness is a book that still holds a very special place in my heart, it’s the least serious of all the books in the Chronicles of Celadmore and the characters are living in a state where they are still celebrating the end of conflict and really don’t want to be drawn into another war and most don’t even want to admit that there is anything wrong.”

There are a few customer reviews to be found for Shroud of Darkness:

“It’s hard for books to distinguish themselves nowadays, especially books in the fantasy genre.

There are many books out there that are well marketed but when it comes to the text, it is always disappointing. This one is brilliant. It says it’s the third book in a series, but it’s the first one I have read and I was able to follow everything that was going on without a problem! The characters are a myriad of people that seem to be written in a very realistic way – you hate some of them, find some of them irritating, some of the stupid, some of them extremely unlucky, some of them that you fall instantly in love with and some you just like because they are, for want of a better word, cool. I’ve talked to my friend who recommended this book and their favourite character is completely different to mine.

The character of Caslo had to be my favourite, he isn’t a major character as far as the plot goes but I instantly fell for him and felt that that he was, to put it simply, cool.

The feel of the book is a bit like the writing of Tolkien but without the long drawn out conversations. The world you enter into is well fleshed out, complete with different languages, races of people, kingdoms, tensions and feels fully formed from the first page. The history is well established and it almost feels like you are about to go exploring the realm of Celadmore as you delve into the pages.

The plot on the face of it seems to give you everything upfront, but this is a ruse. There are many twists to the plot and C.S. Woolley has managed to keep the plot simple without being boring, focusing on key elements of what makes a good story and filling out the book with the many subplots that are woven together with the main plot line and flesh out the story into something wonderful.

I am now reading the next book in the series as the cliffhanger at the end demanded I read on before going back to find the other books in the series. I would recommend this to anyone who loves to read and especially those who don’t like the fantasy genre – it may just turn you!” – Taken from Amazon.com

“My favourite character in both the Chronicles of Celadmore and the Nicolette Mace: the Raven Siren books first appears in Shroud of Darkness and there is a child-like quality to a lot of the characters. Most of them are still young and have a very narrow view of the world that has been forged by the war. There are a lot of insular attitudes and misunderstandings that come out of these. Shroud of Darkness will also always be really special for me as a book as it got to number 4 in the Kobo fantasy charts and was outselling George R.R. Martin, Raymond E. Feist, Robin Hobb and it was the first moment when I felt like a real author.”

Shroud of Darkness is available for £1.99 in digital formats and £9.99 in paperback formats from all good retailers. You can get your copy now from amazon.

Did you know?

Shroud of Darkness was originally over 1,000 pages long and comprised most of the events of Lady of Fire and End of Days. When C.S. Woolley finished writing the original draft, she decided there was just too much for it to be featured in one book and so split the story into three to let it develop more and ultimately led to a more satisfying story as well as the creation of the other 18 books in the series as well as the 20 part spin off series, The Dragonian Wars. For those of you that are counting, that’s 41 books in total!

RE 3

Rising Empire: Part 3 is the final instalment in the Rising Empire trilogy and marks the end of the reign of Queen Kasnata. Rising Empire: Part 3 is the third book in the Chronicles of Celadmore, but it is the sixth book to be written in the series.

“Because some of the events in Rising Empire: Part 3 directly effect what happens in End of Days, I had to make a decision about which book I would write first. In the end, it made more sense for me to write End of Days first and work out how everything turned out before I went back and wrote the causes. I had a rough idea about how everything would string together, but I have always found it much easier to start at the end and work backwards. This is going to make the rest of the series quite interesting as I have faithfully promised to write the rest of the series in the right order.”

Because this is the final book in the trilogy there are some new characters that are introduced, but equally there are a lot of characters that readers also say goodbye to.

“With everything that is going on with the blood moon, the madness in Grashindorph, the brewing rebellion, the strange goings on in Delma and the war, there is an awful lot of danger facing most of the characters. If you have read the Shroud of Darkness trilogy, you’ll know there are a handful of characters that survive to later in the series, but there is no guarantee that anyone else will reach the end of the book alive.”

Rising Empire: Part 3 is currently available on pre-order and is set for release on 19th May 2016. This has been pushed back by 5 months from the originally intended publishing date.

“There is so much that is going on in Rising Empire: Part 3, it’s just going to be a rollercoaster ride for most readers. In writing this book, I created one of my favourite characters in the series, so I hope that people like them as much as I enjoyed creating them. There is also a few direct messages that are woven into this book that focus on elements of life that I have been affected by, so there were some moments in this book that were particularly important to me whilst I was writing.”

Indie Sci-fi and Fantasy did an interview with C.S. Woolley about Rising Empire: Part 2 and Part 3.

  • What would say has been your biggest challenge and achievement in writing Rising Empire: Part 2 and Part 3?

Actually finishing them. I had two things happen that really made me want to give up writing altogether, the first was one of my books was plagiarised – copied word for word and published with someone else claiming they wrote it and then about a week after having to deal with lawyers getting it all sorted, I got a really nasty review that just made what little motivation I had left disappear completely. If it weren’t for a group of people that work at my local game store (yes, I go into this game store so often I am now friends with all the staff) I wouldn’t have written either of these books; so some of the characters were named after the four of them and Rising Empire: Part 2 is dedicated to them.

  • What have you learned about yourself as a writer through writing Rising Empire: Part 2 and Part 3?

I’ve learned that my way of working has changed since I first started writing and that it’s probably a very good thing. Every book I write, I become more organised and when I get to the point when I think I’ve had enough of a series, I find I really haven’t and can’t wait to start writing the next one.

Rising Empire: Part 3 was nearly split into two books to allow C.S. Woolley a bit more space to explore the lives of the characters. Instead, she opted to keep the trilogy format of the story instalments in tact and put plans to write some shorter stories that explore some the characters you see less of in this book.

RE 1

Rising Empire: Part 1 is the first book in the Chronicles of Celadmore series. It is a part of a trilogy that acts as the prequel to Shroud of Darkness. Though it is the first book in the series it was the third book that C.S. Woolley wrote in the series (the first two being Shroud of Darkness and Lady of Fire).

The Rising Empire trilogy wasn’t just written to provide a little history and context to the rest of the Chronicles of Celadmore, it was written as there are lots of things in the overall plot of the series that needed to be established before C.S. Woolley could write about them in later books.

“I realised part way through writing the Shroud of Darkness trilogy that there would just be too much to explain and set up if I left it until the books where the events take place. I was always going to write a book about Kasnata, but it turned out that one book needed to be three.”

Not only was the storyline for the trilogy allowed to flesh out and develop going from one book to three, but it also gave C.S. Woolley the opportunity to go back and visit some elements of the plot that she had originally discounted due to the constraints of telling the story of this particular group of people in one book.

“I got to include a lot of characters that wouldn’t have gotten mentioned too heavily, maybe as a passing name, like General Misna and General Quisla; it meant that I could reveal a lot more about the characters later on and not rush to giving everything out about them in the first book. So if you think you have each of the characters figured out by the end of Rising Empire: Part 1, you might be very surprised by the other two volumes!”

Rising Empire: Part 1 has had its own mix of reviews, however two bloggers that particularly enjoyed the book took the time to give a detailed review.

It enjoyed a great review from Book Viral:

In such a competitive and popular genre it’s becoming increasingly hard to find truly original work, but Rising Empire proves a delightful exception as C. S. Woolley takes her readers on a magical quest of intrigue and high adventure. An enthralling read with a host of opulent characters, Woolley wields elegant prose to create an imaginatively rendered fantasy world that proves wholly absorbing. It’s certainly a compelling story which benefits from a well-conceived plot and one that’s sure to appeal to readers who revel in the intricacies of power and subterfuge as she brings the ambience of her imagined world to life. There’s no doubt that Woolley has a discerning eye for detail and understands the tropes of her genre, but it’s her characters that make for a truly notable read.  There’s ambition, greed, strength and weakness to be found in them and it makes for a rich tapestry that ensures her readers will become fully invested in the trials and tribulations they each face.

An epic in the making, Rising Empire is sure to be well received by fans of Woolley and is definitely deserving of your interest. It is strongly recommended!”

The review —
I must read the last two books in this quality written series. If you like adventure, with good battling evil, and one whale of an ending, then read this book. The story flies by, and it’s a book you can’t put down. Who will win the day–the evil king or his valiant wife?

The ending of the book leaves the reader happy and anxious as we head toward the next book in this three part masterpiece. The author is to be commended for a well thought out story, that is bathed in imagery and vivid scenes. It gathers the readers and transports them to another time, long ago in a distant land.

My best advice is get the book and get comfortable. It’s well worth the investment of time and money. Happy reading and enjoy!!!” To read the whole article please visit The Leisure Zone.

Rising Empire: Part 1 was written in just 28 days – that’s from sitting down to plan out the plot into chapters to getting the cover art down, everything edited and sent off to the printers! Rumour has it that C.S. Woolley survived on just an hour’s worth of sleep every day in order to get in done in a short space of time. She maintains, “I would have got it done faster if I hadn’t had Dexter’s Lab on in the background whilst I was writing. I can focus much better when I have the West Wing on.”

The Chronicles of Celadmore is a fantasy series based in a fictional realm, written by C.S. Woolley. The Chronicles of Celadmore falls into the epic fantasy end of the fantasy genre with some influencing elements of gothic fiction and gritty realism that combine to create a fantasy series that is as much for those who like fantasy as it is for those that generally find the genre to be too fluffy. The gritty nature of the series will appeal to those that enjoy the Game of Thrones series and the writing style will appeal to those who enjoy the works of Tolkien, Joss Whedon and Raymond E. Feist.

The realm of Celadmore is packed full of unique languages and cultures for each of the races that exist as well as feuds and histories that will satisfy those who enjoy lots of wider reading around the series. The Chronicles of Celadmore is a series that is set to include 21 titles as well as a spin-off series under the title “The Dragonian Wars”. Each section of the Chronicles of Celadmore is broken down into trilogies, though there is an overarching plot for the whole series.

The titles in the Chronicles of Celadmore that are currently available are:

FrontRERedesign300An empire will rise and nations will fall.

The nine kingdoms of Celadmore are at war. The people suffer under tyrants that strive to gain land and power in the struggle for superiority.

Queen Kasnata is trapped in a loveless, political marriage to King Mercia Nosfa VI. Her children are held hostage by her husband to force her armies to march on his whim.

The people of Grashindorph, capital city of Nosfa, are oppressed by their king and beneath the surface of the city a revolution stirs.

As war threatens to tear Celadmore to pieces, Kasnata struggles to bring peace back to the realm. She fights against venality to bring hope to all those that are oppressed, as well as those that have been caught in the savagery of warring kings.

Can the legendary queen, Empress of the Order find the strength to fight knowing the fate of her people rests on her shoulders?

“We assume he has been alone with the queen for the last few days and yet no one seems too concerned about it. He seems to have the trust of a lot of very suspicious individuals. If I were an assassin or a spy, then that is how I would infiltrate our people.” Misna observed with a shrug.

“You are an assassin, spy and infiltrator.” Amalia said with a raised eyebrow.

“Then perhaps we should be more mindful of General Bird than we have been.”

The nine kingdoms of Celadmore are at war. The people suffer under tyrants that strive to gain land and power in the struggle for superiority.

Leinad, the heir to the throne of Nosfa and son of Kasnata, is held hostage in the city of Grashindorph where revolution is beginning. Hermia, mother of Mercia and former Queen of Nosfa leads the revolution against her son, a revolution to end the wars and tyranny that their people suffer under. Kasna and Kia are safe from their father in the Oasis of Tulna, but Duke Kelmar DeLacey, Regent of Delma, still hunts for them.

Kasnata’s empire is growing and her legacy is being forged through war, not diplomacy, a mantle her people will carry down the ages.

But there is more at work than any mortal knows, their lives, though fleeting, will form the realm and the consequences of their actions will be felt for centuries to come.

The guardians have left the Ballo Fortress and move to advise Kasnata in the absence of the Abbott and Cassandra. Cassandra is headed north with Tola, Shamgar and a boy that is as dangerous as he is mysterious. The Abbott is in the Spire, waiting for events to unfold before he emerges from it.

King Mercia Nosfa VI holds Lady Mia captive, a trap laid to capture her brother and traitor to his people, General Rathe Bird. But the king’s madness increases with every passing day, losing what is left of his mind under the influence of Neesa’s magic. Mia weeps over Joab, her heart and will broken, resigned to her fate as a unwilling second bride of the king.

Front REPT2 redesign

Rising Empire: Part 2 is still undergoing a re-write due to C.S. Woolley and her ever-so-slightly obsessing compulsive ways. She has had some requests from readers to re-release the book, so it is currently available as a NaNoWriMo title through Smashwords. Most of the work on this book was completed during the April NaNoWriMo event and the re-write is being done during November. Those that choose to take advantage of this offer will be able to download a completed copy of Rising Empire: Part 2 from Smashwords when it is finished without having to buy the book again.

The sequel to Rising Empire: Part 1 is OUT NOW!

Front REPT2 redesignFollow the continuing tale of Queen Kasnata as she forges a reputation that will last for centuries. We asked C.S. Woolley how she felt about the latest volume in the Chronicles of Celadmore and what impact the book has on the rest of the series.

“I was really excited about going back and telling the story of characters that are mentioned and not really seen in the Shroud of Darkness Trilogy. The plan for the Rising Empire novels has been in my head since I started writing Shroud of Darkness. It isn’t so much to provide backstory, you don’t need to have read them before you read the Shroud of Darkness trilogy, but at the same time, they do go a long way to establishing a lot of the history that you read about in that trilogy. I really enjoyed getting to go back and outline the events that happened before moving on with the rest of the series. There are also things in the Rising Empire books that are going to be really important later on, so I felt that going back and getting them written was the right thing to do.”

The blood moon rises and madness is unleashed.

The nine kingdoms of Celadmore are at war. The people suffer under tyrants that strive to gain land and power in the struggle for superiority.

Kasnata, Queen of the Order and Queen of Nosfa leads her armies against the people of Delma. A war she did not want to fight, but her husband, the King of Nosfa, Mercia Nosfa VI has forced her hand.
