20813481_10159107159330024_422380415_oThe journey that Sarah and Lieutenant Forsythe take from India to England is one that travellers in the early 1800s would have had to brave before the Suez Canal was completed and the establishment of direct voyages from England to India.

The two departed from Bombay on the Hugh Lindsay steamer, a boat that sailed between Bombay and Suez. It was a vessel built by the East India Company and weighed 411 tons. She never carried cargo, but mainly carried mail and passengers. She was confined to chugging backwards and forwards on the Red Sea rather than trying to sail the full distance between Bombay and Portsmouth.

There was no direct route between England and India in 1838 so travellers had to journey to Suez and then from Suez to Cairo over 80 miles of desert on camels or sand carts. The port of Cairo was a donkey ride from the city where passengers had to then sail on the Nile to Enfe. From Enfe they would then have to take the Mahmoudieh Canal to the city of Alexandria.

Alexandria was the last city that travellers had to visit before taking a steamer to Portsmouth, and then finally a coach ride or horse would take travellers from Portsmouth to London.

This journey could take months to complete if the weather was bad. Construction on the Suez Canal began in 1859 and was finished in 1869. It was opened on 17th November 1869.

The Suez Canal begins at Port Said, a city that was established for the canal in Egypt and finishes at Port Twefik, now known as the Suez Port. When the canal was completed the journey between England and India was reduced down to only ten to twenty days.

It was originally a single-lane waterway with places at the Ballah Bypass and the Great Bitter Lake for ships to pass each other.

Seawater flows freely through the canal as it has no locks or gates. In 2014, construction began to expand the canal which was officially opened on 24th February 2016.

You can find out why Lady Sarah and Lieutenant Forsythe were taking this perilous journey from India to England in A Thief in Stickleback Hollow, book 1 in C.S. Woolley‘s Mysteries of Stickleback Hollow.

Not everything is as simple as it first appears in the Mysteries of Stickleback Hollow. Step back in time to Victorian England with these charming books that combine the best of Jane Austen, Agatha Christie and the quintessentially British country manor to bring you historical fiction that will leave your heart racing.

Book 5 in the Mysteries of Stickleback Hollow

When her parents die from fever, Lady Sarah Montgomery Baird Watson-Wentworth has to leave India, a land she was born and raised in, and travel to England for the first time. Finding it almost impossible to adjust to London society, Sarah flees to the county of Cheshire and the country estate of Grangeback that borders the village of Stickleback Hollow. A place filled with oddballs, eccentrics and more suspicious characters than you can shake a stick at, Sarah feels more at home in the sleepy little village than she ever did in the big city; however, even sleepy little villages have mysteries that must be solved.

It’s March and the Grand Tournament is upon Stickleback Hollow. Reverend Percy Butterfield is thrilled to see cricket returning to the village and the best that Lancashire, Yorkshire and Staffordshire have to offer to the village cricketing world are all coming to vie for the title of champion.

But something is not right in Stickleback Hollow, items are still missing and there is a familiar face lurking in the shadow that could spell trouble for Sarah, Arwyn and Alex.

Life in Anglo-Saxon England is far from fair. There are strict classes that all people fall into. At the top there are the kings, then the thanes. After the thanes come the warriors, then the ceorls, and at the very bottom are the slaves. Women are not equal to men; and then there are the prisoners.

The books, like the Children of Ribe series, have been formatted to help children who have dyslexia to be able to read a little more easily and give them an opportunity to engage with literature. Why children with dyslexia? You can read about it in C.S. Woolley’s own words here or you can see her talking about it (and reading) here.

The Children focuses on a select number of children and a sprinkling of adults that you can read more about in our characters section below.

Wyrd mock upFor our Friday blog instalment we’re taking a moment to look at the latest children’s book series by C.S. Woolley and asking the question, why WYRD?

The word wyrd translates as fate, which was chosen to mirror the first book in the Children of Ribe series. Fate is a powerful force throughout myths and legends and certainly seems to play a large role in many adventure stories.

But we’re not so much interested in the title of the first book in the Children of Snotingas series as we are in why the series was put together in the first place.

When we put the question to C.S. Woolley, this is the answer she gave:

“Over Christmas I was most of the way through writing my Viking children’s book series and my mother suggested that I work on an Anglo Saxon kids book series as there were seemingly no books about the Anglo Saxons in fiction for kids to read and my primary school library was in need of these kinds of books.

So I did a lot of research over Christmas and put together a plan for an Anglo Saxon series. It’s set in the early 600s when King Penda of Mercia announced to Northumbria that they were breaking away from them. Mercia went on to become the most powerful and influential kingdom during the Anglo Saxon time, which is why I decided to write the first 8 Anglo Saxon books during the time when it was being formed.”

rav 1

Not only have the books been written to help children learn about the Anglo Saxons in a fun way, they have also been laid out in the same format as the Children of Ribe books. This is to make it easier for dyslexic children to discover a love of reading and have an easier time of reading on their own.

The paperbacks of WYRD are priced at £6.99 on amazon, but you can order them direct from Mightier Than the Sword UK Publications for £6.49 including free UK delivery. The digital copies of the book are £1.99 on amazon, though range from £1.80 to £2.49 through other digital retailers.

To order direct from us here at Mightier Than the Sword UK simply email office@mightierthanthesworduk.com and we will provide you with an invoice and payment method for your order.

Today is the day! Wyrd has finally been released after several delays. Yes, you can now step back in time to the 700s with this Anglo Saxon series, set before the Viking invasion, the Children of Snotingas follows a group of children as King Penda separates from Northumbria and the kingdom of Mercia is born.

Wyrd is the first book in the series and marks the start of the first story arc of 8 books that explore the lives of nobles and slaves alike during the time of the Anglo Saxons. Using historical accounts, C.S. Woolley has pieced together this world and the events that occurred 1300 years ago in order to bring them to life for children and adults alike.

Wyrd mock up

Wyrd: Book 1 The Children of Snotingas by C.S. Woolley, artwork by Davy Ross

Step back in time to the age of King Penda, when the kingdom of Mercia was born.

Life in Anglo-Saxon England is far from fair. There are strict classes that all people fall into. At the top there are the kings, then the thanes. After the thanes come the warriors, then the ceorls, and at the very bottom are the slaves. Women are not equal to men; and then there are the prisoners.

With Mercia breaking away from Northumbria and war stirring the blood, there are a handful of boys that want to change their lot in life and move from being slaves to warriors. Wayland, Halsey and Channing are the sons of slaves that have the chance to change their stars and train with the sons of the ceorls to become warriors in Snot’s army. Ravinger, the youngest son of Snot, has been put in charge of their training.

But all is not well in Snotingas. Kipp, Morven and Nyle are prisoners of Snot, captured sons of the Thane’s of Northumbria, and they are determined to cause as many problems as they can for their captors. Though the sons of Snotingas are preparing for battle, the sons of Northumbria still have to contend with the daughters of Snotingas.
