If you’re looking to purchase gifts for Christmas from the Mightier Than the Sword UK online store, then today is the LAST day that you can do that. As it takes at least two working days to process orders, we will do our best to process any orders placed after today before we close for Christmas on 19th December.

You will still be able to order items from the online store and there will be online help available to advise you of processing times during the closure of the offices. Our offices reopen on 8th January 2018 when we will recommence the processing of all back orders in the order that they were received. Our standard processing time on an order is between two and five working days. The reason for the processing time is down to making appointments with our authors in order to get books signed. (We can’t keep them in their cages all the time).

If you have any questions about an order you have placed or any of our products, then please feel free to contact the online store.

The following items are available from the online store:

WyrdHQ_HWCHistorical fiction for kids. Set in Britain before the Viking invasion in the year that Mercia chose to break away from Northumbria, the Children of Snotingas is a children’s adventure series in the best tradition of Enid Blyton and Arthur Ransome in the time of the Anglo-Saxons.

Filled with adventure, action, war, betrayal, friendship, political intrigue and love that changes alliances, it is the ideal book for children between the ages of 7 and 13 as well as adults that never grew up.

Wyrd mock upThe series starts in 626AD as the influential kingdom of Mercia is just beginning to form.  Set in Snotingham (now known as Nottingham) the series follows the children who live in the settlement through the battles and betrayals that saw King Penda create the most powerful Anglo-Saxon Kingdom.

Step back in time to the age of King Penda, when the kingdom of Mercia was born.

Life in Anglo-Saxon England is far from fair. There are strict classes that all people fall into. At the top there are the kings, then the thanes. After the thanes come the warriors, then the ceorls, and at the very bottom are the slaves. Women are not equal to men; and then there are the prisoners.

The books, like the Children of Ribe series, have been formatted to help children who have dyslexia to be able to read a little more easily and give them an opportunity to engage with literature. Why children with dyslexia? You can read about it in C.S. Woolley’s own words here or you can see her talking about it (and reading) here.

The Children focuses on a select number of children and a sprinkling of adults that you can read more about in our characters section below.

Hild mock upThe Children of Snotingas series aims to provide a fictional books that are not only enjoyable for children to read, but are also as accurate as possible to help support the National Curriculum of the United Kingdom. The books feature information on:

  • everyday village life
  • the different classes that existed in Anglo Saxon society
  • the different duties and jobs of these classes
  • the difference between men and women
  • weapons used in battles
  • historical place names
  • Anglo Saxon character names
  • People that were alive at the time and shaped the fate of the country
  • Marrying between tribes and nations to try and forge alliances
  • Beliefs
  • Other cultural elements
  • Wildlife and threats

bt_bronze_braceletsIf you are a regular visitor to the site, you may have seen the gorgeous bronze arm rings that have been crafted for us on display. These are currently out of stock, but we did have a request made for cheaper arm rings that children could play with. Thus the highly creative C.S. 21729975_10159259171270024_933749259_oAs the arm rings are made out of polymer clay they are suitable for children and adults alike and as they are made to the specified size and number of each order without the use of moulds, each arm ring is unique.

So to celebrate the release of these little marvels, we’ve put together a second Arm Rings of Yngvar gift set that features all eight of the books in the Children of Ribe series, the A3 map of the Danelands and one of the polymer clay arm rings for just £56.99 until 21st September 2017. FATE, Book 1 in the Children of Ribe series has been used by Marton Primary School in Cheshire to help teach the Viking part of the National Curriculum to their year 3 and 4 pupils.

Wyrd mock upFor our Friday blog instalment we’re taking a moment to look at the latest children’s book series by C.S. Woolley and asking the question, why WYRD?

The word wyrd translates as fate, which was chosen to mirror the first book in the Children of Ribe series. Fate is a powerful force throughout myths and legends and certainly seems to play a large role in many adventure stories.

But we’re not so much interested in the title of the first book in the Children of Snotingas series as we are in why the series was put together in the first place.

When we put the question to C.S. Woolley, this is the answer she gave:

“Over Christmas I was most of the way through writing my Viking children’s book series and my mother suggested that I work on an Anglo Saxon kids book series as there were seemingly no books about the Anglo Saxons in fiction for kids to read and my primary school library was in need of these kinds of books.

So I did a lot of research over Christmas and put together a plan for an Anglo Saxon series. It’s set in the early 600s when King Penda of Mercia announced to Northumbria that they were breaking away from them. Mercia went on to become the most powerful and influential kingdom during the Anglo Saxon time, which is why I decided to write the first 8 Anglo Saxon books during the time when it was being formed.”

rav 1

Not only have the books been written to help children learn about the Anglo Saxons in a fun way, they have also been laid out in the same format as the Children of Ribe books. This is to make it easier for dyslexic children to discover a love of reading and have an easier time of reading on their own.

The paperbacks of WYRD are priced at £6.99 on amazon, but you can order them direct from Mightier Than the Sword UK Publications for £6.49 including free UK delivery. The digital copies of the book are £1.99 on amazon, though range from £1.80 to £2.49 through other digital retailers.

To order direct from us here at Mightier Than the Sword UK simply email office@mightierthanthesworduk.com and we will provide you with an invoice and payment method for your order.

Everyone here at Mightier Than the Sword UK absolutely love World Book Day! Not only do we all have an excuse to read books all day as part of our sponsored readathon, but our facebook feeds and twitter feeds come alive with people posting about their favourite books and people dressing up as book characters!

images (2)From Cruella De Vil (Dodie Smith’s The Hundred and One Dalmations) to the Three Witches (Shakespeare’s Macbeth) there really is something truly magical about seeing favourite book characters brought to life and running around the streets of the UK.

Every year for World Book Day, National Book Tokens, a collection of book retailers and publishers all come together to help get children reading. 14 million children in the UK are given a £1 World Book Day book token through their school – meaning that nearly everyone under the age of 18 in the UK gets a token.

wonderfulworldbookdaywoo-hoo-its-wbdThis book token is almost as valuable as the golden tickets that Willy Wonka hid inside his chocolate wrappers (Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as it can be taken to any of the participating bookshops (the list can be found here) and traded in for any one of the ten £1 World Book Day books.

These books are:

For children aged 2 and up (and adults that remember the amazing Elmer book from their childhood) there are two books: Elmer’s Parade and The Dinosaur That Pooped A Lot!

For children aged 5 and up there are books titled A Pirate’s Guide To Landlubbing and Magic Animal Friends: Lucy Longwhiskers Finds A Friend.

For children aged 7 and up there is The Diary of Dennis the Menace (both Dennis and Nasher look far more insidious than they did when we were children) and Goth Girl And The Pirate Queen.WBD-website2

For children aged 9 and up there is a Michael Morpurgo book, Best Mates and Dork Diaries: How to be a dork!

For young adults there is Geek Girl: Geek Drama and Killing the Dead.

world book day 2 After some hot debate here in the Mightier Than the Sword UK offices we have come to the conclusion that we should pool our pocket money and get hold of a copy of A Pirate’s Guide to Landlubbing as quite clearly it is a self-help book that everyone should own.

The easiest way to recognise a World Book Day book though is the World Book Day logo on the cover.
